About Us

AFA was established in 1990 as a Fund Administration company primarily to service government and private institutions in medical aid administration. The company has since grown in leaps and bounds to mastering the finesse required to manage, disseminate and provide high level health management services.

To date AFA has administered the government medical aid, Botswana Public Officers’ Medical Aid Scheme (BPOMAS) since inception in 1990 and Pula Medical Aid Fund, a private corporate medical aid that has the biggest companies with interests in diamond mining, polishing, Non‐governmental organizations, financial institutions and the keen small enterprises with a hunger for growth. We have also extended our reach by assisting Government of Botswana in the management of HIV | AIDS by administering on a Private Public Partnership (PPP) basis major projects and Chronic Disease management.

In just a mere 24 years we have moved from handling all our processing from paper to almost being paperless. This has been achieved through the use of our highly advanced customized processing system. AFA is a member of the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) and is in full compliance with the highest regulatory standards applicable in Southern Africa. We also deal with consultants offering specialized services and support to ensure 99% systems availability. Currently we have a staff complement of an excess of 130 employees servicing 210,000 lives covered through the schemes.

The capital shareholding structure of AFA is currently as follows:

  • 50% Matseno(Pty) Ltd

  • 25% Medscheme (Pty) Ltd (RSA)

  • 25% Medtrack Limited (UK)

It should, however, be noted that the above structure has been recently reviewed, and now includes participation of Botswana citizens.
