Appointment of Duncan Thela as Managing Director of AFA

The Board of Directors is happy to announce the appointment of Mr. Duncan Thela as Managing Director and member of the Board of Directors of Associated Fund Administrators Botswana (Pty) Ltd (AFA), with effect from 07 June 2013.

Duncan holds an MBA degree from the University of Botswana and Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. In additional,he has attended training in a number of disciplines including Quality Management Systems, Public and Private Partnerships and Clinical Management of HIV/AIDS and is a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Botswana.

Mr Thela has, over the past 27 years, acquired wide commercial, managerial and professional experience in the pharmaceutical and medical aid fund management industries; as well as health programs’ management. He also has experience in the development and implementation of innovative health risk management solutionsand Public Private Partnerships for health.

Duncan joined AFA in 2001 and was instrumental in the setting up of the Managed Care Department which provides managed care services to the administered medical aid schemes with a focus on benefit management for chronic illnesses and disease management for HIV/AIDS.

Since 2010 and as the Chief Operations Officer (COO), Duncan has been responsible for the day- to- day operations of the Company and administered medical aid schemes; contributing to the growth of the administered schemes to the current 214,000 lives covered.

He is a member of the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, the Botswana Health Professions Council, and Chairman of the Drug Advisory Board. He is also a member of several other national committees involved in health policy matters.

The appointment of Mr. Thela, a leading healthcare executive, signals a renewed focus onproduct innovation to drive private and public healthcare solutions of the country’s largest medical aid administrator. AFA administers the Botswana Public Officers’ Medical Aid Scheme (BPOMAS) and Pula Medical Aid Fund (PULA).
